Kelsey Martin, M.D., Ph.D.
April 22, 2016--The election of Dr. Kelsey C. Martin, interim dean of the David Geffen School of Medicine, to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences was announced today by Dr. John Mazziotta, Vice Chancellor for UCLA Health Sciences. In his email to UCLA staff, Dr. Mazziotta noted that this tremendous honor recognizes Dr. Martin's achievements to advance our understanding of how experience changes brain connectivity to store memories. As one of the country's oldest learned societies and independent policy research centers, the American Academy convenes leaders from the academic, business and government sectors to respond to the challenges facing the nation and the world.
Dr. Martin joins the ranks of such notable members as founders John Adams, James Bowdoin, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and George Washington; Ralph Waldo Emerson; Alexander Graham Bell; Martin Luther King, Jr.; Albert Einstein; and Nelson Mandela. Its current members represent today's innovative thinkers in every field and profession, including more than 250 Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winners.
Dr. Martin's election to one of the most prestigious organizations of its kind in the world signifies the high regard in which she is held by leaders in her field and by Academy members throughout the nation.
