The UCLA Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) is pleased to announce the R Bridge Award for highly qualified, New Investigators who conduct interdisciplinary and translational research. Eligible new investigators at one of the four UCLA CTSI institutions are invited to apply for a one-time bridge award for up to $50,000 from the CTSI over 12 months to support research and career development across the spectrum of translational science but requires equal matching funds from their home institution(s)/department(s) for a total award up to $100,000.

These awards are specifically intended to help new investigators make the critical transition to independent R01 funding, allowing those who have received competitive scores on their first R01 proposals to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to remain scientifically productive and strengthen their proposals for resubmission.

Who May Apply

This program is limited to New Investigator R01 submissions that are likely to be funded during the next year. Applications to other funding mechanisms are not eligible. Applicants must:

  • Possess a doctoral-level degree (e.g., MD, PhD, Pharm D, DDS) and be a full-time faculty at one of the four CTSI partnered institutions (UCLA, Cedars-Sinai, Charles R. Drew University, and LA BioMed/Harbor-UCLA).
  • Be the Principal Investigator (PI) on a recently submitted (in the last 12 months) and reviewed NIH R01 application that was scored but not funded.
  • Meet the NIH definition of a New Investigator. List of smaller grants & awards that maintain New Investigator status.
  • Commit a minimum of 75% of full-time professional effort to conduct research.
  • Plan to resubmit the R01 application in response to the review within the next 12 months.
The Award

CTSI R Bridge Scholars will receive up to 12 months of funding up to $100,000 (CTSI and matching funds), which may include salary, fringe benefits and research-related support. Scholars may receive funding until receipt of an NIH R01 grant up to a maximum of 12 months.

Selection Criteria

The following criteria will be used to select R Bridge Scholars:

  • SCORED but unfunded NIH R01 applications submitted in the last 12 months with addressable concerns.
  • Quality and innovation of the research proposed for the award period.
  • Research productivity and academic performance to date.
Application Packet

  1. A copy of the most recently submitted R01 application materials on Standard Forms SF424 (R&R).
  2. NIH Summary Statement.
  3. Current NIH Biosketch.
  4. Detailed K Bridge budgets (using Form Page 4) for the funds requested. Please prepare two separate budgets and justifications as follows:
    1. CTSI budget: up to $50,000 (direct costs)
    2. Department matching funds budget: up to $50,000 (direct costs)
  5. Letter of support from department chair or division chief to commit equal matching funds.
