Biostatistics, Epidemiology & Research Design (BERD) Program

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

High quality translation depends on research that is feasible, efficient and reproducible. The Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Research Design Program (BERD) Program provides the UCLA CTSI research community with broad access to professional biostatistical collaboration to ensure high-quality research. The program facilitates improved study designs, reproducible and high-quality data collection methods, appropriate analytic strategies and accurate result reporting. This ensures that studies are reproducible, efficient and appropriately designed to maximize the likelihood of impactful research.

BERD faculty and staff statisticians have broad expertise in epidemiology, clinical trials, big data analytics, community studies and high-throughput molecular data/genomics.

PROGRAM AIM

Aim 1. Foster high-quality research through consultation, education and novel approaches.

  • Consultations.  Provide coordinated one-stop access to BERD services.
  • Novel statistical applications and methodologies. BERD projects include a joint research effort with BIP to develop tools for data quality and utilization of the cross-institutional and within-institution EHR data warehouses; visualization of public health data and EHR data using R shiny heat maps; and novel clinical trial design and analyses, including escalation with overdose control.
  •  Biostatistical education and training. In addition to seminars and workshops, BERD faculty teach in the certificate and master’s degree program in clinical research. BERD faculty also provide education navigation.
